Welcome to the Department of Labour.
This site contains basic information on laws relating to the workplace. It outlines the main rights and obligations of employers and employees.
We take you from the start of the employment relationship to the end. We also provide you with some suggestions on good practices for employment relations.
The Employment Relations Act 2000 replaced the Employment Contracts Act 1991.
The general approach of, and some terms used in, the Employment Relations Act differ from those in the Employment Contracts Act. For example:
- the Employment Contracts Act has a contractual approach and refers to collective and individual employment contracts;
- the Employment Relations Act has an "employment relationship" approach and refers to collective and individual employment agreements.
