If problems arise with your application regarding eligibility or the level of payment, the Department of Labour can investigate for you. The Department can be contacted by phoning 0800 20 90 20 during normal business hours.

If you are not satisfied with the result of the Department’s investigation you can seek a determination from the Employment Relations Authority.

The Employment Relations Authority will listen to your views, and the Department’s and make a decision based on the facts before it.

If you want advice on how to seek an investigation, or are not satisfied with the result of an investigation by the Department, call the Department of Labour on 0800 20 90 20 during business hours. The Contact Centre staff can help you make an application to the Employment Relations Authority.

Where can I get further help?
The Department of Labour has developed a web-based calculator to help you calculate your entitlements, and obtain the forms and letters you need. It is customised to provide clear advice to birth mothers, and partners. You can access it on http://www.ers.dol.govt.nz/parentalleave/calculate/ or phone 0800 20 90 20 during business hours.
Once completed, the calculator provides a full outline of your entitlement (based on the information you have provided) and provides instructions on how to access that entitlement.

You can also get help by contacting:

  • Employers’ organisations
  • Citizens Advice Bureaux
  • Community law centres
