When can it start?
A self-employed person can choose when to start their parental leave, but must apply before the earliest of:
- Your return to work
- When the paid parental leave ends
- You cease self-employment.
Parental leave payments are payable from whichever comes first - the start date of parental leave, the birth of the child, or the date the person assumes the care of a child they intend to adopt.
A self-employed person can start their parental leave earlier than planned for any reason, such as on advice from their medical professional. However, the payment period will not be extended, and remains at 14 weeks.
A self-employed person then needs to ensure their application form is forwarded to Inland Revenue.

When can it end?
Paid parental leave ends when the self-employed person (whichever occurs first):
- Has received the full entitlement of 14 weeks
- Returns to work
- Ceases to be self-employed
- Transfers part or all of their paid parental leave payment to their partner.
Payments will not stop before the 14-week payment period ends if the self-employed person:
- Is declared bankrupt or their business goes into liquidation
- Has a miscarriage or ceases to have care of the child
- Dies or the child dies.
