To be eligible for paid parental leave, you are required to take a break from work while receiving payments.

However, you may:

  • Maintain a level of oversight over your business, or do occasional administrative tasks, to ensure the continuity of your business
  • Receive income that was earned prior to the start of your leave
  • Receive income from work undertaken by other people in your business.

Maintaining this contact with your business will not affect your payments.

If you return to working regular hours for your business or cease self-employment before the 14 weeks payment period is over you will need to notify Inland Revenue as your entitlement to parental leave payments will end.

The ability for a self-employed person to maintain oversight of their business recognises the differences between being employed and self-employed.
